sneezekit awoke to the sound of wails. his body felt warm against his mother's cold fur.
"she's dead," stemwood mewed sadly, his eyes filled with grief.
sneezekit sneezed, then let out a high-pitched mewl. "lightsun can't be gone!" he nuzzled her pale belly fur, hoping he could wake her up.
but she wasn't waking up.
"lightsun!" cherrykit wailed. "lightsun!"
stemwood wrapped his tail around the she-kit. "she's gone to starclan." his voice was surprisingly calm.
tigerpaw stopped at the entrance of the nursery, her dark brown tabby pelt shining in the newleaf sun.
"i'm sorry, stemwood," she mewed.
her mother, tawnypetal, sat in the nursery, watching her two kits tumble over one another, squealing.
"i'm a fox!" spiderkit squealed.
oakkit let out a pretend wail. "oh no! i'm crow-food!"
sneezekit chuckled. tawnypetal's kits were two moons younger then him and his sister, but they had lots of energy.
tigerpaw's eyes glistened. "do you want me to get you a mouse from the freshkill pile, sneezekit?"
the pale tabby kit nodded. "yes, please!"
