Mythical king of the Lapiths, Phlegyas angrily destroyed Apollo's Temple in Delphi after learning his daughter, Coronis, was killed by Apollo due to an affair she had. The destruction didn't go unnoticed, so Apollo killed Phlegyas, sending him to Tartarus.

In the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri, Phlegyas is changed from a prisoner, to a ferryman of the River Styx. The former king reluctantly ferries Dante and Virgil across the Stygian marsh, and after a brief encounter with one of Dante's political enemies, shoos away the poets when they reach the other side of the river.

In Dante's Inferno, the video game loosely based on the poem, Phlegyas is now a giant with a body made of burning magma. What appears to be a raft at first, turns out to be the top of his head/crown. After fighting through hordes of enemies, Dante eventually takes control of Phlegyas to break down the gates to the City of Dis.
