A self-made theory about the void, and what it actually is. Under no circumstances may my theory be reproduced, quoted or taken as your own without my permission. Look to the comments, and tell me what you think about the theory, and if there's any space for improvement/anything that can be edited to make more sense. Thank you.

Well reasoned. I suppose we might never know.
It also makes sense, because the end is IN the void, not above or below. But then, how do we survive it if we can't survive falling out of the world? Well, it's kind of like the Earth, not too close to the sun to burn up, not too far to freeze. Similarly, the end is in a place of somewhat comfort, which explains how the endermen manage to survive despite the heat. It also explains why you only die upon falling into the void, since it's therefore hotter than the place you were just in, and therefore hotter than the enchantment can protect you. Thus my theory: The overworld and nether are stacked on top of each other, separated by the boiling-hot void, inside which is the end, in a place of comfort.
Thank you for listening.
'But then, how do we survive the "void" in the nether and end?' I hear you ask? Well, it's probably to do with the portals you take into said dimensions. Perhaps the portals give you an immunity to the void's effects. It would make sense for both of them. The nether is obvious: perhaps it is too hot for a normal player, which is why you're coated with a special protection enchantment upon entering through the portal. And it would also make sense for when you go to the void in the nether, because you aren't 40 blocks below the bedrock, just ON the bedrock. So that's why ya don't die there. As for the end: Well, you're given a similar but stronger enchantment - ever wondered why the end portal is more complicated than the nether portal? (cont'd)

Oh and it doesn't stop there. What if the end was in between the overworld and the nether, and sat in the void? I mean, it makes sense - the End is just a bunch of islands, not even connected, much like an asteroid belt of sorts. And you get the same death message in both - '---- fell out of the world.' Which is to say, YOU fell into the void. And why exactly do we die? Well, it might be the heat. Perhaps the void is so hot you die upon entering it? That'd explain your gradual death, not an immediate full-shot thing. And it would also make sense - what if endermen were black (excuzes moi) because their skin was so charred, and raw because of the heat? That would also explain their hate of water, which would burn their sensitive flesh.

The space above the nether. Have you ever thought about what that place REALLY is? Well, let's compare it to the void. They're both open, completely deVOID (AHAHAHAHHAHA) of anything. They're separated from the overworld/nether by bedrock. And, they both reflect the 'sky' in their respective place (e.g., in the nether, you see a red haze, and in the overworld, you have the blue sky. So, it's safe to say that they are most probably the same thing, which leads me to think, what if the overworld is sitting on top of the nether, with the void in between, and a portal to get in between?
