Had a coyote gotten in the house one time? I dismissed the question and looked at the floor. The carpet was wrinkled and there was the outline of something square shaped underneath near my barefooted feet. I rolled up the rug silently and looked at the much lighter floor where the rug resided only moments before.
There was a latch on a small door leading down. I pulled, but it was locked. Placing my ear on the ground, I listened for machinery. Was this where my aunt kept her washing machine? Or did she bath herself as well as her clothes in the river? I thought I could hear something down there. Snarling. Growling. I sat up. I was back in bed.
I crawled out of bed and crept down the stairs as quietly as possible. Once down there, I walked from the kitchen, where the staircase let out, and into the next room which was the relax area. There was a brown couch only slightly lighter than the areas of wood wall where tapestries and tribal masks didnt engulf. On the couch, there were several antique dolls and a cabbage patch kid dressed in a ripped red dress and bonnet. There were claw marks on the couch and toys, I realized.

There were still at least four more rooms. My parents guest room, Auntie Jems room, the relax area, or as normal people called it, a den, and I heard Aunt Jem say something about a basement. Was there an attic too? A hidden bathroom? (I refused to believe that my aunt actually used a hole).

Everything is okay. Dont bother anyone, its okay. I felt like a baby. I was in eighth grade and still ran to my parents when I had nightmares. I decided to go back to sleep, but it was harder than I thought, and I tossed and turned for a few hours before concluding that it was useless and settling on exploring a bit. It was six oclock AM, so I didnt go outside, but I had only seen the porch, backyard, kitchen, and my guest bedroom so far.

I sat up, the feeling of being held still around me and the echo of a cackle in my ears. I was in the guest room of Aunt Jems again, my doll in my arms. I was sweating, but everything else felt okay. It was just a vivid dream, I tried to convince myself, a side effect of having an overactive imagination.
