To give the leggings more dimension, the darkest colour should be where the legs meet in the middle. The lightest colour should be along the middle of the leg. That's really the only rule of thumb I follow. The pattern in which the colour can appear is up to you :)

Undertale is an amazing game, I listen to Smooth Mcgroove's covers of every song while I make skins. And as for the legs, I'm glad if the way I did it inspired you. I don't mind copying, maybe you can find a way to improve my technique and make your own style for doing leggings
