In the Book he's controlled by a WICKED chip, Gally throws a knife at Thomas but Chuck intercepts it, dying in Thomas's arms.

In the Book, Gally's actions, especially killing Chuck, are not entirely his own but are forced by WICKED's control, making him a tragic figure who briefly regains control before being rescued.
