James was just trying to survive like the rest of the people in his building. Zombies on the news caused panic in there, and some people started to let people in to save them. He interacted with one of the people who came in, and they were infected. He became a zombie in the night and ate his friends. He infected the entire building along with the outsiders and he wandered out of the building in search for more humans.
