in my headcanon, before you reach the spirit world, you are in the abyss, typically a guardian (the guardian of the spirit world) would come into the abyss and lead you to the spirit world, however, if you cannot leave in time, your 'soul' becomes lost.. your colour fades, and you become just another steve trapped in the abyss.
They dont tend to be very friendly
