Why?

I was about eight years old. My Madre always told me to never go into the basement, I was curious, what the hell was always making the noises? One day I finally went down the steps, it sounded like a puppy, it would be fine, right? I opened that big 'ol door and tip-toed down the steps. .I didn't see a puppy. Madre yanked me out of the basement and screamed at me. She said never do that again, and gave me some candy before going back to work. I did feel better, so I didn't ask about, why the kid in the basement was making the noises of a puppy or why he had no hands or feet.
