This is set in the future, where space travel exists. there are things such as hypersleep, (for long distance journeys in space) spaceships, etc. basically star trek (and star wars too but star wars is more like fantasy)

the marines are basically...well marines in space.
if you want to know the full story of the nostromo's disappearance, either watch alien (1979) (It's a fun watch! very spooky. highly recommend. worth your time. this isn't an ad I swear) or watch a recap of it. I can't explain things very well lol

the alien their encountering is a xenomorph. I won't tell too much about them because you can just figure it out from the movie (or the movie recap)
