Now the second quake had come, and mostly passed, and Kalani was hidden within the tangle of spires at the top of the sky, and Raxem was here, falling, unable to change her eventual fate.

Magic would not help her. As experienced as she was, she could not use her magic in the open atmosphere. No living being could. Except the phoenix. But the phoenix was a myth. Even the great dragons had to fly close to stone or ground to use their fire.

The bridge was approaching, its heavy form throwing miles-long shadows over desert and ocean. A well-timed sonic blast at the right angle might propel her into the path of the bridge, but those were difficult to conjure even when on solid ground, and Raxem was too far away to access the powerful skeins of energy flowing through the pillar.

Then she was engulfed in a blanket of clouds, thinner clouds, not like the thick fog of the upper atmosphere. These clouds had rolled off the thick jungle atop the massive stone arch and were dissipating over the sea like fresh snowmelt off a mountain peak. She could somewhat see her surroundings through the wet haze: the green blur atop the bridge, the distorted shoreline dividing the sea and land.
