Raxem silently cursed herself for not explaining it to Kalani. For not trusting her. But there hadn’t been time. No time. To disclose what could happen to the world if the core remained unstable for much longer.

I thought . . .

There would be more time. . .

If I don’t get to the Capitol . . .

No. She wasn’t going to make it to the Capitol.

But . . .

The next sky-quake will be worse.

The next tremor could be months off. Or days. But it would come.

The Poles . . .

The Poles, at the Northern and Southernmost extremities of the planet, were the most vital supports of the tellusphere.

If the Poles collapse . . .

All of a sudden, she broke through the cloud. It fell away from her, the wide flat bottom catching the beams of fading light. And the world opened up around her, the vast vault of the sky glowing pink and orange as the retreating star raced for the horizon.

The dew that had gathered on her face streamed off behind her, drops shimmering with the dying light of the evening star. Finally able to get her bearings, Raxem twisted in the air, snatching at the edges of her flailing cloak. She managed to seize them and quickly stabilized herself.
