Kalani’s senses came crashing back.

The shuddering spires of this hanging labyrinth.

The trembling stone upsetting the dust on the trails.

The deafening roar of shattered crags careening into the abyss.

The thunderous silence of emptiness below.

It played over and over in her mind. The sweet little alchemist just out of reach. Arms lacerated by the ragged edges of the broken cliffside. Blood seeping from a thin cut on her cheek. Calling for her general as she slid away.

I’ve lost her.

I . . . I failed everyone.
