In a moment, Raxem was gone, disappeared through the dusky purple mist, the same hue as her eyes. Her eyes wide with fear, like those of a child during their first flight on the back of a wyvern. Just a child. Fallen from the top of the sky.

Kalani knelt frozen in disbelief, her hands hanging limp by her sides.

No.

It didn’t happen.

It can’t happen.

She’s the only one.

The only one who can fix this.

Kalani perched still, silent, on the edge, unaware of the rock crumbling beneath her. It collapsed, and for a moment, she accepted the fall, willing to follow her companion down to the rocky shoreline. Then she felt a sudden jerk as her wyvern, her faithful Peldor, caught her by the straps of her armor and dragged her back from the precipice.
