Bones - Part 3

After a moment of only the sound of rumbling tremors behind their panting breaths, Kalani released the hand of the little alchemist, and turned to the waiting wyvern, eager to resume the pace.

“Come on,” she called back, “We’ve got ground to cover before nightfall.”

A renewed trembling of the rocky spire urged Raxem forward, to follow the general to safety. But as she went to take a step, there was a quiet crack as the stone beneath her surrendered to the quake. A moment of weightlessness, and then the sudden impact of her chest on the overhanging ledge before her. She saw Kalani whip around with a look of sheer terror, an expression Raxem had never seen her hold before. Kalani lunged with the speed of a crys-viper, racing to Raxem as she slipped off the trail, hands scrabbling in the dust for any purchase. She found none and lost her position on the ledge. Kalani desperately grasped for her outstretched hand. She felt the palm of the little alchemist against her own and closed her hand around it. And it slipped right through her fingers.
