Steve was stabbed by Herobrine (the dark purple gash across his body) and was corrupted on the majority of his left side. As blood poured from his wound, his corrupted side led him towards a nearby cottage in the forest and killed the inhabitants with his bare left hand. Although blood came steadily from his scar up until this day, he remained alive and is hidden somewhere deep in the world of Minecraft.
