it's a combination of a lot of things! firstly, shape is important-- making sure the outline looks alright. secondly, color is important too. hueshifting goes a long way :)

the shape and colors can be amazing, but shading is the hardest part to get down and also the part that makes the most difference. i started with the creases or folds of the wing (the darkest bit you can see lines of in 3 places). the shape of these lines is important, because it dictates the rest of your shading of the wings. i tried to make them a nice blend of vertical and horizontal; vertical to represent the individual feathers and horizontal to represent the rows. then add your medium-dark shades to add to the shadows and your light shades for highlights.
