An explanation:

Because of the lack of a proper atmosphere on Mercury, it cannot hold in its heat. So, despite being only about 36 million miles from the Sun, the dark side can fall to 300 degrees below zero (fahrenheit), which is why one side of the skin is a heck of a lot darker than the other.
