Walrus

Here's the Skindex Zoo's latest arrival, a walrus! It was a fun request by SnakesAndLadders. Hope you guys like it!

WALRUS FUN FACTS:
- Adult walrus are typically about 7.25 - 11.5 feet in size and can weigh up to 1.5 tons (3,000 lbs or 1,360 kg)!
- They live up to 40 years in the wild.
- Both male and female walrus have large tusks and they use them to break ice as well as for defense.
- Walrus are social animals, congregating in large herds. Females and males each have their own herd.
- Scientists recognize two subspecies of the walrus, the Pacific and Atlantic walrus.
- The worldwide population of the walrus is estimated at 250,000.
- Orcas and polar bears are their only natural predators.
- Walrus can withstand freezing temperatures as low as -35C (-31F), which is why they need so much blubber.
- Walrus can dive up to 90 m and stay underwater for long up to 30 minutes!
- They rely on vibrissae (whiskers) to help them find foods including clams, mollusks, sea cucumbers, etc.
