science cloned an extinct animal back to life in 2003. the pyrenean ibex was a type of wild goat found in remote spain. the last ibex, celia, was found killed by a fallen tree, but scientists acquired dna samples and were able to reconstruct two hundred and eighty-five embryos. fifty four were transferred to related wild goat species. only two survived the initial two months of gestation, and only one was born alive. she died after seven minutes after undergoing severe respiratory distress. an autopsy revealed she had a defect in her lungs. this is technically considered the first successful cloning of an extinct species.
