Born in Ireland, joined the British Army until he left for the United States. He went to Arkansans and lived there until the civil war kicked off.

He gained the nickname Stonewall of the West for his efforts on the western Front. As the war dragged on he was one of two (General Ewall was the other) who argued for the emancipation of slaves to have them fight for the south. Pledging to lead such a brigade into battle.

in 1864, he lead a attack against a very well defended Union position (against his wishes) where he died early in the attack.
