Shocker, I know. It was originally made for Half-Life 2 as a fallback texture. It is used in all Gldsource, Source and Source 2 games. It is iconic because it has appeared in lots of media over the course of it's life. It's texture is even used in Minecraft as it's fallback texture! So the cycle repeats.
