I always put 1 light source.
I would look at an arm and think... how would I pixelate that

I would look at other skins then look at reality and 3D shapes. If a color wouldnt look well shaded on its own, I would always add a little bit of color transitions. My shading evolved. I thought of not making it too simple or complex. I would always use colors or shades that look well together. I started layering for a better effect. You can develop your own style too!
