your magic once you unlock it. Learn to be powerful.'' her eyes sparkle.

''What if we just want to live normal lives?'' I ask softly, though only Yoko hears me, and she shrugs.

''Normal is boring, right?''
''Right.'' I sigh softly. ''I just...miss my aunt is all.''

''Oh.'' her eyes soften with sympathy for a beat. ''But...we get to learn magic, right?''

''Right.'' I repeat, though I trail off as Selene's last words catch my ear.

''Once a Sealed enters the Sanctuary, they are changed forever.''
''What's wrong?'' I whisper.

''N-nothing...'' she glances down at herself, though I know she's unable to see the symbol on her shoulder. ''Just...I can relate to what she's saying, that's all.''

''You sure?''

''Yeah.'' she smiles. ''I'm good. Enjoying the slack-off session, Birdy?''

''My name is Lark.'' I roll my eyes and struggle to pay attention to the Councillor's voice.

''Originally, the Sealed were thought of as monsters and threats. But over time, they grew to be thought of as

''We're not exactly certain how the Sealed came to be,'' the woman continues. ''But after the Falling, the marks began to form on infants. Every year, two children are born Sealed in each territory, as it's been for two centuries. I'm certain many of you have discovered how you stand out. Perhaps being drawn to odd things. Perhaps your personalities differing. Perhaps simply the marks.''

Yoko gasps softly, and I turn to see her widened eyes.

''No...none of you are magical. Yet.'' she lets a flurry of snow start in her wake as she paces. ''You are all Sealed, which means that your magic is locked away. All of you also have probably noticed the odd markings on your bodies.''

I glance at my wrist as my pulse begins to race, tracing the image of a lark with my eyes. The odd bird. This thing that terrifies me.

Magic.

This mark means magic.

Yoko's eyes widen then as she fully realizes what she just said, and she raises her left hand and snaps, waiting eagerly for what happens.

Nothing.

I roll my eyes and shove her lightly.

''The first thing you do when you discover you're magical is try to kill everyone?''

''Not /kill/.'' she grins. ''Just /dissolve into tiny particles of dust./''

''So kill.''

''Precisely!''

Selene rolls her eyes and claps her hands, drawing the attention back to herself.

Magic.

The word ripples through the classroom the second that Selene closes her mouth. Magic exists. Magic is /here/. People know magic. /We/ can use magic.

We're not all going to be killed after all.

''Holy cow...'' Yoko grins like a dork. ''Magic...we're magical, Larky Lark...'' she stands up and raises her hand.

Councillor Selene sighs.

''Yes, Yoko?''

''How can I be magic? Do I just...snap and half the population disappears?''
