Phoenix shook her head. ''I know, I know, but...um...I think that Melody is on to you. You should talk to her.''

Raising my eyebrows, I turned around to see a head of familiar blonde hair, a mix of an angry and shocked expression on her face.

A look of realization came onto Phoenix's face. ''Oh...to find her. Nicole, right? Can we come? Please, Ruby? Well help you-''

''No!'' I said quickly, ''thats not a good idea.''

Duncan pouted. ''Ill be good, I promise. I was born in California and lived there until I was two.''
''What? No, you were born in Florida,'' Phoenix corrected him, ''But anyways, really, Ruby. We just want to be your friends. And friends help each other, even when they dont want help.''

''I appreciate the offer, but I cant drag you into this. This is my problem, not yours. I should be the one doing this.''

I shook my head, beginning to turn around before both Phoenix and Duncan grabbed my arm.

''Uh, Ruby-'' Duncan began.

''A theif. In the school. That stole Melody's money,'' he repeated, more slowly this time.

Phoenixs eyes darted to me, and then she reached down and pulled the money out of my pocket, waving it in the air.

''THEIF!'' Duncan yelled at me, a little too loudly, causing everyone to gather in the hallway and stare.
''Duncan, shut up!'' Phoenix covered his mouth with her hand and lowered her voice. ''Ruby, did you steal the money?''

I tried to make up an excuse. ''Well I didnt /steal/ it, I /borrowed/ it. I was gonna give it back after I bought a plane ticket-''

Duncan's face lit up. ''Ooh, plane ticket? To where? I wanna come-''

''California,'' I said cooly, trying not to sound too suspicious.
