Ah, I'm so sorry if you find this a cliffhanger! I had to go, so I was wrapping up the chapter. But anyways, I hope you enjoyed this chapter of the alternate.
Feeling uncomfortable, she climbed into bed, and closed her eyes.
Lise wiped away her tears. Why did her mom have to be like this? Once, Connor and Avery woke up, they ate a grim and silent dinner. Her mother retreated to her room, and left Lise to care for bedtime prep. By the time she finished, the house was much less tense. After putting Connor and Avery to sleep, she walked to her own room. When she opened the door, she could've sworn there WAS a shape in her window. She did a double take, and it was gone.
'Lise, I meant to tell you, I did. Your fathe-' 'He said you didn't tell anyone for a long time' Her mother seemed upset. Genuinely upset. 'Lise, I' 'What kind of mom HIDES this from a kid?' Lise felt her face flushing, and she couldn't hold back the tears. Her mom seemed angry now 'I wanted you to be SAFE, Lise. SAFE. You hear me? Telling you would've made this worse' Before Lise could retort, her mother shot her a scathing look, and left the room.
She went to her room, sat, and stared at the wall. She sat there until her mom timidly peeked in. 'Lise?' Lise looked up at her mom. 'Y-yes?' Despite herself, her voice cracked, and she could feel tears welling in her eyes. Her mother gained courage and rushed towards her. 'Oh, Lise, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean for them to want to take yo-' 'TAKE me? Why didn't you say that beFORE?' Lise broke out of her mother's embrace and glared at her. Her mom edged away.
As she walked past her siblings room, she heard something. She could barely hear it over her parents. It was sobbing. She opened the door. Connor sat, trying to comfort Avery as she let out guttural cries. Lise felt terrible. She went up to Avery to comfort her. She stayed there for quite a while. Eventually, Avery and Connor fell asleep from sheer exhaustion, despite it not being dark. Lise guessed most kids were just like that.
'Lise. We know it's an extremely silly law, but they have their reasons' Her mother was horrified 'Reasons?REASONS!?' Her voice grew louder 'You expect ME to let go of MY child because someone has REASONS?' Lise was starting to edge out of the room. Her father replied, his face illuminating her mother's with a cold light. Both her mother and father started swearing, getting on topics she hadn't heard in years. She sighed. They got like this quite often.
'This world is much, much crueler than you'd expect, Lise.' Her mother's voice ec***d meaninglessly through Lise's head, as she stood, trembling. 'Around when we were born, there was a law. The law said that specific children were born with ancient roots of our distant ancestors, and held a sort of... ilness.' 'A specific organization has the right to take away any child showing the signs' Lise could barely breathe 'What kind of idiotic law-' Her father cut her off.
