Gruff is one of those things that one day just came to be. They (perhaps a he, perhaps a she) just crawled out of a puddle of paint, that has been left when the painter left, and so they came to be. Gruff is not evil, nor are they especially good. They find something/someone they like, and than that is what they protect and care about. You could say that Gruff is an innocent. They are the paint, that never got painted. They are someone without intentions painted on them. They are what they choose to be.
