"Perhaps one of the most unsettling creatures I've ever laid eyes upon, native to the 'soul sand' valleys and rumoured to eat the souls of unfortunate wanderers who perish. However, as is often the case with rumours, there is a much more rational explanation for this actually quite harmless animal."

"The main entity in the middle is actually a worm like creature that feeds upon the various mosses and mushrooms it finds using it's large toothed mouth, sometimes growing patches of such moss on itself as I have illustrated. The pulsating, writhing mass of screaming faces around the lower and middle section is, not the captured souls of passed wanderers, but actually it's offspring, which stick around the parent until large enough to fend for themselves. The 'soul sand' they live in is actually formed by generations of molts from these creatures as they grow, over time compressing down and retaining the horrifying facial expressions of the young."

"They seem very curious about dropped items, many of which fall from a dead entity. Perhaps the villagers thought they were capturing souls of the deceased, when in actuality they were just investigating something new."

As someone who works with hundreds of animals most people consider scary, one thing I'm often reminded of is many animals are not that frightening afterall upon learning about/studying them. That was the base idea I had for this thing, something with a bark far worse than its bite
it definitely looks awesome though, I can't wait for someone to do a faction that resides in the nether that uses skins similar to these
At first I was like "oh my god this is horrifying" then after reading it I was somewhere along the lines of "oh that's actually a pretty cool fella"

wow man well done. imagine how u drawed this piece.
Glad to hear you enjoy it. As for the designing process, all I can say is that it was alot of trial and error, if I make any similar ones I'll probably try and improve the quality of the screaming faces
I don't think any of my skins went through as many iterations as this one aside from the Threadripper. Initially this one wasn't going to have a face at all and be a more fungal entity covered in neverwart, but after much messing around I settled on the crimson nylium patches on the top and an assymetrical mouth. In hindsight, warped nylium would have better suited the soul sand valley aesthetic
