Down, down, down,
In a blizzard of white,
Not a sound, not a peep,
It's quite a sight.

Not one set of footsteps
Crisscrossing the white,
Not one bird's chirp
That's hidden from sight.

All the moon-white snowshoe hares
Curled in their dens,
All the bears in deep slumber,
All the squirrels undercover.

Almost all the humans asleep in their beds,
Oblivious to the happenings
Just outside.
The world a muted jumble of colors.

On the front porch
Of a cottage
A shadow dwells,
Pigtails, a coat, and boots.

There a girl sits
Who had heard the doorbell
Rung by a stranger,
Whose footsteps were long already gone.

A basket on the doorstep
Was her eye's feast,
For in the basket lay
A baby.
