-END CHAPTER 1-
Koneko sighed. This would be the last time she would be with her mother until their break. She got out, and her mom, welling with tears, hugged her. *Mom.* She said. *I knew you'd be emotional, but if I had known just how emotional, I would've taken a cab.* She said. In reality, she was scared on the inside. She could barely breathe, and she wanted to go back home with her mother, and sit on her soft bed, and look out her own windows. It was going to be a long school year.
They arrived just in time to see a white-haired girl rear-end another car. The girl got out, and yelled at a redheaded boy who was backing out his truck. *I hope she isn't my roomie.* Koneko thought as her mother drove past the exchange. They pulled to thefront of the school. Koneko's mother got out first, and opened the trunk. She pulled her daughter's bag from the minivan, and set them on the pavement.
*Mom!* She shouted. *We gotta leave, or else I'll be late, and miss check-in!* She said, as they piled into the minivan.
*I'm sorry, dear. My cat urges are much stronger than yours. After all, I have much more cat's blood than you.* She buckled her seat belt, and they were off. They rode in silence for quite some time. After a few quick stops to look at birds, they were finally atthe school.
Cat charm was a little trick her mother showed her when Koneko was young. She could easily charm her way out of any situation, especially those pertaining to her unusual attire. Her mother hugged her, and they stepped outside together. They both paused to look up. A group of blue and black birds was sitting in a tree. Koneko stood in a slight daze. Shaking her head, she grabbed her mother, who was still looking at the birds, and took her by the hand.
She knew it wasn't going to be easy keeping her cat side from coming out, but she was going to try. *Mom!* She called. *I got all of my bags in the trunk!* She yelled. Her mother was wearing an over sized sweater like Koneko's, and a slouch beanie. *Just getting ready to go out.* Her mother said, pulling the sweater over her tail. *Don't forget, if anyone asks, just show them a little cat charm.* She said with a wink.
Koneko knew for a fact that Inu had also been chosen for the schooling program. *As long as she isn't my roommate.* She thought in her head. Ever since they were young children, Inu had always been there to beat everyone in sports, and then rub itin the *****'s faces. She said she didn't like bad sportsmanship, yet Koneko thought otherwise. As she piled her bag in the back, along with several other items, she thought about what school would be like.
*Well, dear. Let's see.* She said opening the cupboard. *How about leftover salmon from last night?* She asked, her big, green eyes shining. *Or maybe we have a can of tuna around here somewhere.* She said opening a drawer. *No, Mom. It's ok. I'll just get something when I get there.* Koneko said. She smiled. She was both nervous and terrified. She wondered about the other people. She had known some real jerks in high school, the biggest being Inu, a show-off, half-wolf half-human hybrid.
She had on her favorite sweater. Gray, with really long sleeves, and it draped low enough to hide her tail. She wished she could cover her ears too, but wearing hats proved uncomfortable and ineffective. Instead, she combed her hair in a way that made her ears blend with the rest of her dark green locks. *Mom, what's for breakfast?* She asked coming down the stairs, bookbag in one hand, suitcase in the other.
